Mobana’s Koi

3 September 2011

I love to look at the displays Swiss origami artist Sipho Mobana creates. He uses this koi (one of my favorite origami fish) in many of his displays. For this model, I lined a traditional sheet of origami paper with kitchen aluminum foil, using a simple glue stick as an adhesive. I believe you are supposed to wet fold this koi model, but found that foil-lined paper worked well. (This was the first time I made and used foil-lined paper.) Because I did not want to make the paper too thick, I only lined one side of the foil, as you will see in the photographs.

You can find the diagram for this origami koi in the 14th Origami Tanteidan Convention book, which the Japan Origami Academic Society publishes. You can also find this diagram in Origami Worldwide, which you can pre-order  order from Amazon. Alternatively, you can watch this 1 min. 22 sec. video to learn how to make the origami koi.
